Recently, a new web host started offering a hosting package boasting unlimited bandwidth and storage for a really small fee. This is a first in South Africa. Not many people were/are convinced that they are able to deliver on their promises, including us, but although we can’t help but be a little sceptical, we’re really hoping they can.

Since we’re always looking for new ways to increase the resources we offer and improve our service, we immediately wondered how this could be useful to our community. We decided pretty quickly that moving QuickShare over to a new host with big goals and no track record would be a gamble and decided against it. That brought us to our next idea: Why not launch a similar site, offering a file hosting and sharing service on this new network, while clearly explaining to everyone what it’s based on and being transparent about the fact that it’s new, untried and untested. By doing so, we can offer a significantly more powerful service to our users for as long as we can while simultaneously testing this new host to see if they can live up to their claims.

So… we decided to put up Databin. The interface of the site is a significant improvement over QuickShare and it’s the way we have been planning to move QuickShare ahead. Also, we’ve made the file upload limit 150MB.

Please feel free to give it a try but please keep in mind that it’s pretty much a test concept based on a service provider that isn’t older than a few weeks. Please don’t use this as a backup service, and please note that QuickShare and Databin will not be held responsible for any loss or damage of data caused directly or indirectly.

Now that I have the disclaimer out the way, please enjoy

We have some important news here at QuickShare. On Monday the 2nd of February we will be moving QuickShare over to a dedicated server (hosted in SA ) which will help us improve our service in the following ways:

Improve upload and download speed and general performance. Since the site will be hosted on its own server, QuickShare will not have to share resources with other websites.

Position QuickShare for growth and scalability.

Provide better security and flexibility for us to explore ways of improving and adding value to the service.

Reduce costs. While the initial cost of hosting a dedicated server is substantially higher, the cost of bandwidth is significantly lower than the shared accounts of most reputable hosts.

While the move promises many improvements, there will be a small price to pay. Fortunately, it will only be temporary and once the move has been completed QuickShare will be back to normal and all your data will be available to you.

What to expect during the move:

Once the transfer ticket has been accepted certain features on QuickShare will be temporarily disabled. You will not be able to upload any new files or delete current ones during the transition period, however, all files already uploaded to QuickShare will be available and will not be interrupted during the transition.

We will have to disable these features to ensure that your data is kept safe and secure during the transfer.

As the DNS propagates and the transition is completed, QuickShare’s full functionality will automatically return. The whole process should take a maximum of 24 hours.

Thank you…

Please bear with us as we make this important move. We look forward to taking QuickShare to new levels during 2009! Thank you for your continued support and for joining us on our journey as we strive to offer South Africans a much need and ever improving file sharing and hosting service.

Kind regards,
The QuickShare Team
